Feb. 19, 2010: Motorola's Networks business has landed a contract from Taiwanese telecom operator First International Telecom (FiTEL) to deploy a WiMAX network in northern Taiwan.

Motorola has worked with FiTEL before and this is the second contract from this operator since WiMAX network deployment in 2008. This agreement reinforces the company's expertise in WiMAX technology both in Taiwan and across the world.

Commercial launch in March

The commercial launch of high-speed mobile data services based on the 4G technology has been scheduled for sometime later this year. The launch will be made once the WiMAX network is certified by the National Communications Commission (NCC) in March.

FiTEL is extending its mobile offerings with these new data services and expects to offer a new media mobility experience to subscribers. The new WiMAX network has been designed for businesses and residents and promises users with greater and stable throughput in uplink and downlink.

Under this contract, Motorola is responsible for designing, supplying and implementing a comprehensive WiMAX network for FiTEL. This network will provide a fast-to-market and turnkey solution to meet FiTEL's needs.

Create new revenue streams

Motorola will deliver several end-to-end WiMAX solutions including high-performance and reliable WAP 450 base stations. Min Yu Chang, chairwoman of FiTEL, noted that the high-speed mobile data service is a fast growing market for operators and expects this partnership will allow the operator to fulfill customers' needs and create new revenue streams.

The Taiwanese operator is impressed by Motorola's advanced WiMAX solutions and their professional servicing team that ensure a fast and smooth deployment of such a sophisticated network.
